Kitchen Notes and a Giveaway!

When Theo was only a month or so old, one of my fondest memories of him, of us, was his body, still in fetal position, nestled against my chest in a sling.  It was during the month of May, our windows open, birds chirping.  My hair was long and lustrous thanks to all those pregnancy hormones and my post-pregnancy body full and nourishing life in a new all-encompassing way.  Barefoot in the kitchen, I moved gracefully gathering ingredients, stirring this and that.  I was baking a loaf of homemade bread. I was a new mama still needing to nest.  Batshit crazy tired, I felt more beautiful than ever before.  I fondly recall looking down at my new babe, his head dusted with unbleached all-purpose flour.  I felt right.

Pregnancy hormones long gone, babes in slings a memory as faint and beautiful as early morning mist.  Now, almost five years later, my boys still hang in the kitchen with me daily.  It's our thing.  It's our spot.  A baptismal dusting of flour on the head replaced with flour, well, everywhere.   Huge messes, sometimes more than I bargain for in the "help" department.  For now though I eat it up.  I know a day will come when kicking a soccer ball out front with neighborhood buds will be so much cooler than hanging with me over boiling noodles and cake batter.   I trust that as years go by it will be in the kitchen where we continue to meet, where we will continue to nourish our roots and grow.  Each day a new memory.  This place where I still feel right and trust that I always will.

When a friend of mine recently added kids' aprons to her shop, I instantly knew what I'd be giving my boys for Christmas.  Not much of a surprise that they absolutely love them!  In fact, once the cookies are in the oven, flour cleaned off counter and floor, the aprons stay on - for now they are capes, or art smocks, or little marsupials keeping Legos safe and warm.

Liz, the creative goddess behind Knitknot & Gumdrop started her Etsy shop "as a means of focusing my wildly, erratic, creative energy."   Handmade and with love you can find simply adorable onesies, scrumptious bonnets, whimsical aprons, and more.

Generously, Knitknot & Gumdrop is giving away an apron to a Mama May I reader for your little one.  Between now and Friday you can enter the giveaway by leaving a comment - a kitchen note.  A link to a favorite recipe maybe...or a memory from the kitchen that you will always savor...or just that Knitknot & Gumdrop rocks!

Using random generator, I'll announce the winner over the weekend.  {and you can choose your apron preference - boy or girl print)

My little one loves to help in the kitchen as well. Sometimes I will decide to make something just so we have that time together.

He has an apron at Grandma's house, but not at home. I'd love to give him one of these.

Thank you for the opportunity.

Oh, your memory of Theo in the sling just melts me. Your beautiful, new mama, "batshit" tired bliss. Wow.

Juniper is all over the kitchen now too. Latest adventure that she is SO excited about: growing sprouts. She really looks forward to rinsing them every morning. Most of my latest blog posts have a photo of J bug in the kitchen!

Juniper has an apron, but I do know a particular nephew of mine whose birthday is next month and who LOVES to cook with both his mama and pops. Great giveaway!

Oh how sweet!!! I can see my son in one of those. He too loves being in the kitchen and makes us eggs regularly for breakfast. Yesterday he set the table, made toast, eggs, and set out orange juice for his dad before he left for work. Heart melt! Though he does love to be outside on his ripstick or his scooter, a good batch of cookies or cake will bring him in to help bake :).

I love the aprons! So cute!

My boys do a lot of cooking with me as well. But some of my favorite stories are when they decide to cook on their own. Like in this story, where Noah cooked up some toilet-paper eraser dough:

Liz's aprons are awesome. I know Henry would love that. He is definitely my little sous chef in the kitchen and he was so excited when we went to my mother-in-laws and he got to wear the apron my husband's grandmother made for him when he was Henry's age. I think its such a special time shared cooking with your kids and I know for Henry he is much more willing to try something new that he helped prepare. Love your blog Katie :)!

My youngest is in speech therapy and we are working on "f" sounds...thanks to countless hours in the kitchen together he has no problem saying the "f"-sound in "Sous-chef!"

I didn't know Liz had a etsy store. Thanks for sharing!

Lily would love an apron! She's always "helping" me in the kitchen and has just started to collect her own kitchen goods! They are adorable! One of my favorite recipes this time of year is Alton Brown's Shepherd's Pie:

I love it when my daughter and I bake together, or she helps me to prep dinner. One of my favorite memories is just from a few months ago when we made thumbprint cookies. It was so sweet to see her make the indents in the cookie tops with her fingers (not just thumbs!) and add in the jam. A lot of it went into her mouth, but we still managed to get some jam into the cookies! Cheers! Cee

I'm finally here! I almost missed my shot at the giveaway!!

One of my favorite kitchen projects of all time is canning. It's a long long art that was lovingly taught to me by two women I adore.

Happy weekend, friend ... xoxo

PS - Ella has an apron or two. I know my boys would love one, too!! Oh, Knitknot & Gumdrop, just LOVE that name ... and the products are pretty awesome, too!

Such cute aprons! My son would love one. He's really into pancakes lately. I finally realized it's just that he likes helping me make pancakes--he just deflates if I tell him we already have pancakes left over from the day before. I make them with whole wheat flour, so they're a little bit healthier!

I know I'm too late to enter the contest, but I just had to add that those aprons are ADORABLE!

This was so fun to read as my daughter who is 3 loves to help me in the kitchen too. I have been baking and cooking with her since she was a baby and I love that we can share this time together. This would be so fun to win!
